History
The story of Bonnet House began in 1895, when Chicago lawyer Hugh Taylor Birch purchased the land as a tropical retreat. In 1919, he gave it to his daughter Helen and her husband, artist Frederic Clay Bartlett, as a wedding gift. Bartlett designed the home in a Caribbean Plantation style, blending artistic creativity with Florida’s natural setting.
After Helen’s untimely death in 1925, Frederic later married Evelyn Fortune Bartlett, who added her own charm to the estate with a passion for orchids and eclectic design. Together, they created an enchanting property filled with murals, whimsical touches, and lush gardens.
In 1983, Evelyn donated the property to the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation, marking the largest private charitable gift in Florida at the time. Bonnet House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 and continues to serve as a museum and cultural center, preserving South Florida’s history for generations to come.
